The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is a vast provincial government bureaucracy that takes in premiums from employers and distributes disability payments to injured workers. For a quarter-century, the WSIB has had trouble meeting its obligations, and governments of all stripes have tried to come to grips with its financial problems. It appears to be a losing battle.

“Toronto, September 3, 2009 - Acting on behalf of its members, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is calling for a third party review of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), amid growing signs of financial mismanagement at 200 Front Street. The recently announced $3.34 billion in losses has pushed the WSIB's unfunded liability (UFL) to approximately $12 billion, up from $5.6 billion in 2001.”
